Yes, Thick-It Instant Food Thickener can be mixed with breast milk, but needs to be consumed immediately. Enzymes in breast milk cause the starch in Thick-It Instant Food Thickener to break down so it is recommended that only the amount of breast milk that can be consumed in a 10-15 minute period be thickened.

Can you thicken larger quantities of liquids with Thick-It Instant Food Thickener in advance?

Yes, you can mix bulk amounts of liquid with Thick-It Instant Food Thickener in advance as long as you keep any unused portion covered and refrigerated. The refrigerated thickened liquid should be used in 2-3 days. Do not leave a thickened liquid at room temperature any longer than 3-4 hours as bacteria may build up in the thickened liquid.

No, Thick-It Instant Food Thickener does not bind fluids. The patient receives essentially the same hydration as if they had consumed a non-thickened fluid. In other words, 98% of the liquid is directly absorbed for hydration. It is important for the patient to receive a significant liquid intake on a daily basis, unless the physician has advised the patient to limit fluids.
